A PILE of rubbish dumped and left on a residential street in Winchester city centre for over a month is attracting foxes, rats and maggots.

Residents say the garbage left outside 4 Lower Brook Street by students who were renting a flat in the building five weeks ago, but rubbish removal teams are refusing to take it away.

Speaking outside the building, a current resident at the property, who asked not to be named, told the Chronicle that he and other tenants have contacted Winchester City Council about the issue, but have received no reply.

Another Lower Brook Street resident said the city council only acted after foxes strewed the rubbish around the street, although it did not remove any of the refuse attracting the animals.

The tenant said he was told by Biffa workers that they were not removing the rubbish as it was not properly sorted for recycling. It is not clear why they did not simply remove the rubbish as unrecycled material.

Moreover, people have been throwing items into a fenced-off area by the property used to store bins used by residents, which has made the situation worse.

The city council has been contacted for comment
