WINCHESTER Flower Club's last meeting before the summer had a prestigious host.

The club welcomed Michael Boyer, past chairman of NAFAS, national judge, national speaker and teacher for a demonstration called Summer Delights.

Therese Fisher, vice-chairman, said: “With a magnificent array of colour, form and texture, he highlighted his ability to impress the audience of members and visitors at St Faith's Hall, Back Street, Winchester, where the club meets monthly, not only to enjoy beautiful flowers but also the company of other like-minded fellows, to learn the art of flower arranging.

“The hall was filled with excitement as the anticipated designs came forth, each one so central to the use of the chosen foliage with differing containers; the simple and exotic. Michael is a master in his knowledge of foliages and flowers and was indeed happy to give tips on the methods of retaining such, with varying structures to secure his designs in a more traditional mode, particularly that of pin holders, (originating from the Ikebana method) which are environmentally friendly. Simple bottles of different sizes and style were the choice of many brides for their wedding breakfast theme, he informed us, as well as bouquets housed in a frame, which are often used on the continent.

“Members who took part in the monthly competition, were rewarded by Michael judging their exhibits, giving them great feedback on how to add to their designs, as well as practical advice on what the Judges are looking for in deciding first, second and third prizes.

“The afternoon was further enhanced by the serving of tea and coffee and delicious homemade cakes - a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon was had by all.”

The club's next meeting is a teaching workshop with Irene Moore on September 12.
