THREE junctions on the M3 have been ranked among Hampshire's worst roads for traffic.

The stretches of road around Junction 11 eastbound and Junctions 9 and 10 westbound have filled three of the top ten spots for the county's most clogged-up roads.

All three stretches cause motorists around 30 seconds of delay per mile on average, meaning that there is a 58 per cent increase in the time it takes to drive through them.

It is hoped that a revamped Winall roundabout will reduce queues (Image: Newsquest)

Steps are being taken, however, to reduce queues around the Winnall roundabout at Junction 9.

A £200 million project by National Highways to reshape the roundabout was given the green light on May 17 to a mixed reception from the public.

Some cannot understand why such a large sum would be spent on the project, with some calling the plans "over-engineered".

Chris Gillham of Friends of the Earth said: “We are disappointed but not surprised that this scheme has been rubber stamped, though it represents very poor value for money, even in the skewed economic appraisal methodology used for these things.

“Once central government replaced the older inquiry system with the fast-track examination process, where objectors are not allowed to cross-examine evidence, it was more or less inevitable that issues would be oversimplified.

"Nevertheless, it is a worry that key elements of objectors’ evidence have been treated by the inspectors in such a superficial way."
