A HAMPSHIRE country pub has switched back to its original name after new management took over.

The Malthouse on Stockbridge Road, was previously known as The Goat at Timsbury.

But now, the new landlords Steve and Mandy Lee have re-christened the establishment, reverting to its original name – a nod to the building's former use.

Steve said: "It’s been The Malthouse for 250 years. It was originally a malthouse – you can still see the oven downstairs.

“A French and Italian guy bought it five years ago and turned it into The Goat. It was more of a restaurant, and now we’re turning it back into a family-friendly pub."

As well as changing the name of the pub, the new management has refurbished the inside, changed the menu and introduced DJ and pizza nights.

“We’ve got an outside bar now and a children’s play area in the garden," said Steve. "[The Malthouse] was always known as a family-friendly place.

“We just want people to know that it’s friendly again. A pub is for the community. Pubs are all turning into restaurants and not focussing on what people are really after.”

Mandy is originally from the area, and the couple say they want to turn the pub into the sort of establishment she knew as a child.

The pub re-opened on April 5 under its new management and got its new name two weeks ago.

Pizza nights and DJ sets are already among the highlights of the week at The Malthouse, with more events on the way.
