A WINCHESTER business has scooped two Great Taste awards for its Caribbean sauces.
Callaloo Corner, based in Athelstan Road, won a Great Taste two-star for Doux Doux (chayote and tamarind) and one-star for Jeez an Ages (apple and mango) hot sauces.
A total of 13,672 products were put through the competition’s rigorous blind judging process; and Callaloo Corner was dubbed as having “raucous aromas", "rich texture” and “remarkable flavours” at the world’s most coveted food and drink awards.
The Doux Doux sauce was described as: “A good pouring sauce consistency with 'legs', to borrow a wine term. On the nose you get orange, smoke, the distinct sourness of chipotle, and it is all very fresh and inviting. In the mouth, there is loads going on, starting with sweetness and orange, followed by tamarind saltiness and sourness, smokiness and truly delicious, lingering, rounded, sophisticated chilli heat. We can think of no improvements!”

Made with a blend of scotch bonnet peppers, chayote, tamarind, orange, fresh herbs, and spices and no additives, the Doux Doux hot sauce was one of 5,590 products to receive a Great Taste award.
Christine Lee Wing, founder of Callaloo Corner, said: “We are thrilled to have won two Great Taste awards for our Doux Doux and Jeez an Ages hot sauces. We have dreamt of this moment and are so proud to be adding the prestigious black and gold Great Taste badge of honour to our products. Less than two years ago we started off in and still produce from, our kitchen at home, hand making our delicious sauces with the love born from our Trinidadian family and culinary heritage. To be where we are today is truly a dream come true.”
Co-founder Damian Corneal said: “Being recognised with a Great Taste two-star means so much to independent producers such as ourselves, as it makes all the hard work and determination worth it! Great Taste is the most recognised accolade for taste and quality in the food and drink industry, so it’s a huge moment for us!”
