A TOWN council planning committee has objected to new cash machines outside a bank, saying the colour is 'rather garish'.

Natwest has applied for the new machines, which have a brighter purple backing, on the side of the building in Market Place, Romsey.

Romsey Town Council's planning committee discussed the plan on Thursday, August 1 and decided to submit an objection. No other public objections had been submitted by Monday, August 5.

At first councillors were unsure about sending a response, but decided their points would have more impact with an objection.

Cllr John Parker said: “I'm concerned about the increased size of the collar around the ATMs. I'm not that connived that the colour is particularly suitable. The current colour around the edge seems to fit in quite well. I'm worried the new colour would look rather garish.”

Cllr John Critchley, the committee's chairman, added: “I picked up on the drawings and thought, 'blimey they look a bit vibrant'.”

Cllr Mark Cooper suggested the objection. He said: “Would it have more weight if we were to object? I think an objection would be appropriate. We have had a discussion recently at the borough council about the importance of taking note of parish and town council comments. This might be one of those tests.”

In the application's planning statement, it said that Natwest is currently undertaking a national programme to replace and upgrade its cash machines.

It added: “The new ATMs will increase convenience for customers by allowing better access, a more ergonomical design and have cyber protected security. They are also accessible for people with hearing loss.

“The works comprise the replacement of the external ATMs to the right and left-hand side of the building. Access to the branch will not be affected by the proposed works nor will they affect the public space.”
