WINCHESTER police say they will be taking more measures against people guilty of anti-social behaviour around an ex-offenders' hostel.

Officers are drawing up Community Protection Notices against a number of people including residents of West View House in Hyde.

The notices are designed to stop bad behaviour with offenders at risk of being fined.

It comes after long-running complaints from neighbours of West View House in Hyde Gate who have repeatedly complained about bad behaviour. On Thursday August 1 its operators A2 Dominion said the hostel will close in the spring.

Police issued a section 34 dispersal order in Hyde over the weekend of July 26-28 in response to complaints.

They said they moved people on but didn't arrest anyone after giving themselves temporary powers around a ex-offenders' hostel.

On July 31 the police took to Facebook to say they 'did ask people to move on but didn't need to formally use this temporary power'. One day later, on August 1, the home's operator A2 Dominion announced it was going to close in the spring.

Police have been door-knocking residents and encouraging them to sign up to Hampshire Alerts which is a free messaging service that allows about crime, witness appeals and investigations.

The Facebook post from PC Mark Jeffery said: “Hi Winchester. Just a little update on some issues in the Hyde area of the city.

“About 10 days ago we became aware of some anti-social behaviour concentrated around Hyde Gate, sometimes into the early hours of the morning.

“Together with Winchester City Council, and listening to residents, I’m confident we've made an impact with lots of high vis patrols and two days of a S34 Dispersal Order. We did ask people to move on but didn't need to formally use this temporary power.

“A batch of Community Protection Notices are being drawn up to shape future behaviour of those involved. Addiction services are being encouraged too.

“I'm glad to say that our increased presence has been welcomed and we have received far fewer reports in the last week as a result.

“And today myself and PCSO Leung were door knocking on Hyde Street signing people up to hampshirealert.co.uk. Other streets will follow! Please check this out and get signed up to find out what we do in your area and to tell us what is most important to you.

“See you out and about.”
