THE Chesil Theatre, in Chesil Street, is preparing its autumn production.

The community theatre group will be performing The Last of the Red Hot Lovers by Neil Simon from Saturday, September 28 to Saturday, October 5.

A read-through of the script will take place on Friday, August 9, while auditions will be held at the Chesil Theatre on Sunday, August 11 and Monday, August 12.

A witty comedy, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers is set in the late 1960s and follows a successful middle-aged, middle-class fish restauranteur, Barney Cashman.

Realising that life is passing by without anything really exciting happening, he sets out to get in on this Sexual Revolution he’s heard so much about. But how suave can a man be who is constantly worried about his fingers smelling of fish and chooses his mother’s apartment, which is empty one afternoon a week, as the location for his desired liaisons?

The fast-paced script introduces three very different ladies who offer opportunities for Barney to stray. Elaine and Jeanette are their late 30s, while Bobbi is in her 20s. She is an aspiring singer so needs to have a pleasant singing voice.

Director Terry Lohr says: “This will be a fun, challenging experience for everyone involved to work on this American comedy classic.”

The four characters must all be able to do a solid American accent, preferably with a slight New York dialect. Terry is an American, so will be helping on the accent.

Members of the public are welcome to join the group for the reading of the play and the auditions on 11 and 12 August.

Start time for these is 7.45pm. Anyone cast must either be a member or join the Society.
