A CARE home just outside Winchester recently invited businesses from across the city to celebrate its new refurbishment.

Flowerdown Care Home, in Harestock, completed the year-long revamp in February and held a drinks reception on a hot, sunny day.

The event, on Friday, July 19, saw the Mayor of Winchester Russell Gordon-Smith cut a ribbon with a giant pair of ceremonial scissors.

Claudia Nunes, general manager, joined Flowerdown in November 2022. She said: “We needed a huge refurbishment with better communal areas to enrich the lives of our residents. The families love the home as well as all the residents.

“The refurbishment took a year with the residents in-house. The team worked really hard because we had to move residents around during the work. All the residents were really happy, there were never any concerns. Even the construction team was part of the family, we missed them when they left.

“We finished in February this year. I'm so proud of my home and my team.”

Claudia added: “This event has shown us that community spirit is alive and demonstrates how amazing and supportive we can be. We hope this is the start of Flowerdown Care home being at the heart of the Winchester community.”

Cllr Gordon-Smith said: “I love to see new businesses and old businesses putting new money into the city. At the basis of everything, we do need to have a really good economy. I didn't see this care home as it was previously, but I've been round today and it's absolutely wonderful. I will have to arrange a date for when I can move in.

“There are some very thoughtful things such as a small family dining room, so when you come to visit you can have a private family meal rather than being with everybody else. I think that's a very subtle touch. There are a lot of good architectural details to make life good and safe for older people. I raise my glass to you and wish all well.”

The home offers activities such as crafts, gardening, animal visits and games on the Nintendo Wii.
