AN on-call firefighter has been honoured for reaching 50 years of service.

Brian Cole, of Bishop’s Waltham Fire Station, is one of only a handful of people to reach the milestone nationally.

To mark his achievement family, friends, colleagues and members of the community gathered for a surprise celebration at Bishop’s Waltham Station.

Brian arrived at the fire station thinking that he was joining the normal drill night but instead he was welcomed by a round of applause, with crews from Bishop’s Waltham and neighbouring Droxford Fire Station forming a guard of honour.

Family members included his son Neil, a crew manager at Hightown Fire Station, and wife Linda who has been with him every step of the way.
