A HAMPSHIRE country pub is closing down just three months after it opened to customers.

The George and Falcon in Warnford will pour its last pint this Sunday, July 14.

The management of the Meon Valley pub cited low customer numbers and high energy bills as reasons for the closure.

Owner Steven Yates, 62, had previously told the Chronicle how he hoped more customers would come after a slow first month in April.

Assistant manager Daniel Brown, 20, said: "The electricity bills were two and a half grand a month and we haven't got enough for it. It's been quiet. The only busy days were Wednesdays, when all the bikers came."

The pub has undergone a series of closures and re-openings in recent years, with its reputation allegedly suffering as a result, said Daniel.

At the time of its most recent opening, Mr Yates told the Chronicle: “I have been doing this all my life, probably since I was 18.

"I’ve always wanted an old country pub – I’ve had city centre pubs and I’ve had other country pubs in the past, similar to this but in Cheshire, which was quite successful – but my partner wanted to be close to parents in Portsmouth as they are getting on."
