MORE photos from the Hampshire Chronicle's unique photographic archive, held by Hampshire Cultural Trust at its base in Bar End.
A French general is shown inspecting the boys in the Army Cadet Force at Winchester College. Cyclists race on a grass track at the police sports day. A dog show is held at the cattle market on Andover Road. The site, now a car park, was used for livestock sales until 1989.
Another photo shows members of a bowls club, with people dressed in their summer best, at a location believed to be Kingsgate Park.
Many of the images show ways of life gone forever. But St Peter's church is still there. In the 1950s it was threatened with demolition. Activists saved it sparking the formation of Winchester Preservation Trust, now the City of Winchester Trust. The church is now the home of Chesil Theatre.
