A REENACTMENT of the UK's oldest recorded motor vehicle journey is returning for its seventh year, travelling through Hampshire.

The Ellis Journey will see drivers dressed in period costumes drive from Micheldever Station to Datchet on Sunday, July 7.

The journey is inspired by The Hon Evelyn Ellis who, on July 5 1895, drove a Panhard et Levassor from the railway station in Micheldever to his home in Datchet.

Evelyn, who was accompanied by motoring pioneer Frederick Simms, left the station at approximately 9.26am, travelling through Basingstoke, Hatch, Blackwater, Bagshot, Virginia Water and Englefield Green.

The pair arrived at Mr Ellis' house at 5.40pm after the journey, which took eight hours and 14 minutes as they drove at an average of almost 10mph, above the speed limit at the time of 4mph, to make a point about the legal speed limit.
