A service station near Winchester was left without running water or working toilets after a malfunction.

Customers reported that they could not use the facilities at the Winchester Southbound Services on the M3 on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

The services are run by Moto with outlets for M&S, Costa Coffee, Burger King and Greggs among other shops.

One motorist, a Southampton woman, 64, who asked not to be named, said: “I drove down from London this morning and I got off at the Winchester services at around 10am.

“The loos weren’t open, Costa Coffee wasn’t open, there was no way to get any water.”

Staff in one of the shops told her the issue arose at around 6.30pm on Tuesday, June 25, and that they had been told it would be fixed by 6.30am the following day.

However, the issue had still not been resolved by 10am.

It was worse, said the woman, for those working at the services who couldn't fill up water bottles or go to the toilet during their shifts.

“We’re going backwards in this country. What do we do? Do we go out in the woods and dig a hole?”

It was unclear if the issue affected both southbound and northbound services.

A spokeswoman for Moto told the Chronicle the problem was resolved at 1pm today, June 26, and began at 4am rather than 6.30pm yesterday.

She said she would contact us with further details.
