A 'George Clooney lookalike' is hoping that his good looks will convince voters that he is their man for July's general election.

Kevin D'Cruze of Bishop's Waltham has announced he will stand for Winchester as an independent candidate.

Frustrated with what he sees as corruption in Westminster, Mr D'Cruze wants to stand up for local people.

He pledges to keep an A&E department in Winchester, to lower housing prices, to clean up the rivers, provide safe passage to second and third countries for asylum seekers, and to reduce the cost of living.

He also wants to improve public transport services, push for a change in the voting system and increase state pensions.

Mr D'Cruze, who jokes he gets mistaken for Hollywood actor George Clooney, has worked in Winchester in housing and mental health. He is also trained as a journalist and has worked with BBC Greater London Radio.

As part of his campaign, he would like to highlight the issues surrounding dementia and the difficulties faced by carers across the country.

He has been diagnosed with early-onset dementia, as was his late wife.

In an election notice, Mr D'Cruze wrote: "The government have made the UK a mess, left the poor behind and we have declined. We have a very unfair system of voting and as a pensioner, I resent having to pay £500 just to stand in this election, but I had to make a stand against this ridiculous, out of touch government."

He is not the first politician in his family, either. His father was a politician in Lewisham, and Mr D'Cruze says his father was described by the local press at the time as an "eccentric character" and he was dubbed "his labour voting son".

He said: "I grew up in that political environment. I am not happy with any of the parties. They are all self-serving. They don't know what real life is like. It cost me £500 to be able to stand, which I have had to pay out of my pension, as I am so passionate about bringing change."

As well as Mr D'Cruze, the other candidates for the Winchester seat are: Chris Barfoot (Independent), Flick Drummond (Conservative), Hannah Dawson (Labour), Andrew Davis (Social Democratic Party), Danny Chambers (Liberal Democrats), Lorraine Estelle (Green), Andy Liming, (Hampshire Independents), Sean Whelan (Reform UK).
