A FAST food chain, soon to be coming to Winchester city centre, wants to be able to show films, play music and serve alcohol into the late evening.

Five Guys is one of the establishments earmarked for the former Debenhams store in High Street, which has been empty since 2021.

Five Guys JV Limited, which operates the chain, has applied to Winchester City Council to show films from 8am to 11.30pm Monday to Wednesday, until 12.30am Thursday to Saturday, until 11.30pm on Sundays and from 11am-2.30am on New Year's Eve.

They also want to be able to play recorded music for the same times, except for until 11pm on Sundays. The fast food chain also applied to serve late night refreshments from 11pm to 11.30pm Monday to Wednesday, 11pm to 12.30am Thursday to Saturday, 11pm to 11.30pm on Sundays and 11am to 2.30am on New Year's Eve.

They have also applied to serve alcohol on and off the premises from 11am to 11pm Monday to Wednesday, 11am to 12am Thursday to Saturday, 11am to 11pm on Sundays and 11am to 2am on New Years Eve

An opening date is currently unknown, but work on renovating the building by MCS Construction is expected to finish in July.

Three planning applications, submitted to Winchester City Council by Firstplan, confirmed that Five Guys and Nando’s will be moving into the space.

The applications are regarding external alterations and signage.

According to plans, the art-deco windows located directly below the Debenhams signage will be retained.

People can comment on the proposals until July 3 by emailing the city council licencing department by emailing licensing@winchester.gov.uk.
