Fire Cadets from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight participated in a day of firefighting related activities and challenges on June 8.

For the first time, these units combined for an action-packed day at Oasis Academy Mayfield in Southampton, including cadets from Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Gosport, Ringwood, Rushmoor, Sandown and Southsea.

Throughout the day, teams keenly vied for points across a series of drill challenges featuring firefighting equipment like hose reels and rope ladders.

According to participants, the competition between all units was fiercely contested. After a day filled with camaraderie and teamwork, all participants relished a well-deserved barbecue dinner and celebratory ice creams.

The Eastleigh Fire Cadets emerged victorious, bagging the trophy for first place. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Cadet (HIWFRS) units make up part of a training programme run by the fire service.

It extends an opportunity for youngsters aged between 13 and 17 to hone essential social, life, work and wellbeing skills.

The programme also aids young people in developing their confidence and personal skills.

In addition, the service provides a convenient platform for new recruits to join the Ringwood, Rushmoor and Sandown Fire Cadet units in September.

HIWFRS’ Fire Cadet Manager Clair Hayward said: "I’m so proud of what the cadets achieved throughout the day - they showed sheer determination, resilience and fantastic teamwork skills and we are so lucky to be working with such an amazing group of young people.

"Huge congratulations to our winning team Eastleigh Fire Cadets and a massive thank you to all our Volunteer Fire Cadet Instructors, Rapid Relief Team, Oasis Hub East Southampton and Phil’s Ices, who all supported our event."
