The late, sadly missed Michael Fontes was a Member of Winchester College Common Room for some 30 years and taught economics to the prime minister, when the latter was at the college.
Like many members of that common room Michael was far from being a Tory, but he held Rishi Sunak in high regard and one would have been astonished to learn that Michael had been unsupportive of and spoken out, in public, against any of his former pupils, despite their different political views (Chronicle, June 6).
Of course, Michael was a man of principle and a gentleman.
