Rebuilding works on The Weirs will shortly recommence, says Winchester City Council

As previously reported, the restoration work started in 2020 and was due for completion in early 2021 at a cost of £275,000.

However, Covid and the need to restore the wall next to the River Itchen and place more fencing on the riverside pathway extended the project.

Now, almost three years after the project was due to be completed, the city council has confirmed that work will resume to finish the rebuilding, with fencing for a contractor's compound already set up along The Weirs.

A city council spokesperson said: “The fencing is in place ahead of the final phase of rebuilding works at the Weirs which was programmed to start this spring.

“We anticipate works will last around three months.”

The city council has confirmed that this phase of rebuilding will cost £200,000.
