With a loud cackle and a swish of a broom, musical Wicked has swept into Hampshire.

And just like the house that lands and causes so much drama in the original story, the show arrives in a whirlwind of colour, dance and incredible vocals.

The show opened at the Mayflower Theatre on Tuesday, May 28, the first night of its three-week stint.

The hit musical that started in the West End - and is in fact the tenth longest running West End show in British history - is on tour, starting in Edinburgh in December and due to end in Manchester in January.

Hampshire Chronicle: A scene from Wicked

The show tells the story of Garlinda, aka Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, the two witches from the L. Frank Baum classic.

It's a prequel to the Wizard of Oz and let's us into the secrets of how these two came to be in Oz - and cleverly tells the relatable tale of friendships over the years.

Like many of us, they meet and become best friends at university, coming of age and finding themselves - with both going on different paths in life.

Of course, as with all good dramas, there's a love interest, and family problems, just to complicate things.

Elphaba plays an incredibly passionate wicked witch, with strong solo songs, that captivate you and even lead you into having some sympathy for her. For once you see her journey, it's easy to see how she could be perceived to be wicked.

Glinda as well, however sickly sweet, becomes your friend as the story progresses - and even though she is so self centred at times, I am sure she's a character we all know in life.

Hampshire Chronicle: Laura Pick as Elphaba

The two leading ladies are both incredible, it's hard for anyone else to get a look in but a scary Wizard, with a brilliant set, terrifying flying monkeys, a swish Madame Morrible, a tragically beautiful Nessarose and a handsome Fiyero make up the rest of this superb cast.

A breath-taking performance of Defying Gravity - arguably the most recognisable song from the musical - closes the first half.

A touching performance of For Good - another standout song from the show - sees Glinda and Elphaba wrap up the story.

It's a feast for the senses, and you'll leave with the tunes and story in your head.

Having such a top class show in Hampshire is a real treat, and certainly shouldn't be missed.
