Towards the end of last week in the early afternoon I was a passenger on the number one bus leaving Winchester along the St Cross Road when I heard the familiar sound of an emergency vehicle about to overtake us.

I have no problem with ambulances, fire engines and police hurrying to a scene but this was no ordinary response.

The police car involved, I'm estimating, must have been travelling at 80mph-plus along the St Cross Road.

I would have liked to have let the incident gradually fade from my memory but I find that days later I am still troubled by it to the extent that I must write to the local press for my peace of mind as much as any hope of bringing about change.

By anybody's standards, the officer driving that BMW was beyond reckless.
