Videos uploaded onto YouTube show what has changed in Winchester over the last half a century.

The films transport us back to the 70s, 80s and 90s. They are a real trip back in time.

The first YouTube video, uploaded by Geoff Claydon, dates to the 1970s. We can see Winchester as it was approximately fifty years ago.

The clip shows where old businesses were located, for example ‘The Elizabethan’ on Jewry Street, which can now be recognised as the Turkish restaurant, Turkuaz, which opened last year.

Additionally, if you pay close attention, you will see that cars were able to drive up and down the High Street when this video was filmed, which is one of the major differences compared to the modern day.

The video also shows the Eclipse Inn, located in the square which of course is still open today.

Another video on YouTube is of Winchester during the next decade - the 1980s.

In this video, you can see recognisable city landmarks.

The trees around the cathedral ground had not fully grown yet, so there was much more space around the area. Additionally, the cathedral seemed to be under construction.

Unlike the previous video however, the High Street is no longer accessible for cars. Instead, you see many people walking up and down the High Street like we do today.

The final video is from 1993 and it shows a protest in Twyford, just outside of Winchester. The protest was about the M3 being extended.

This video has a slightly different feel to those in the 1970s and the 1980s, it shows a group of protesters campaigning against the Department of Transport, who were extending the M3 motorway by destroying Twyford Down.

You can start to see the modernisation of fashion and the way people act and look.

The protestors were unsuccessful in their attempts to save the Twyford Down.
