A packed Romsey Abbey on a balmy Saturday evening has a magical quality, as the late sun streams through the Western windows, lighting up the huge nave.

Down at ground level, we were lit up in a different way, by the brilliant performance of Vivaldi's Four Seasons by Nova Foresta Classical Players.

This instantly recognisable piece was given new life with vivid introductory cameos from the solo violinist, Catherine Lawlor. Her brilliance was superbly complemented by the ensemble, among whom the viola, cello and double bass unit was outstanding.

The concert concluded with another favourite, Fauré's Requiem, sung by Salisbury Chamber Chorus under Simon McEnery's expert direction. The clear diction, careful phrasing, and dynamic range on display were remarkable. The baritone and soprano soloists came from the choir, and were excellent.

Again the players of Nova Foresta provided sensitive, essential accompaniment.

In the Abbey, Romsey has a superb venue for high quality music making. This concert added greatly to that tradition.

There was a retiring collection for Oxfam.
