These injuries can occur when a fall forces the shoulder down and the head to the opposite side.
As previously reported, it was originally believed that Mr Godden had been involved in a hit-and-run collision with a vehicle.
However, following the post-mortem, officers no longer believe a vehicle was involved in his death.
Mrs Rhodes-Kemp adjourned the inquest to April 29 next year.
Last night there was a round of applause in the 28th minute at St Mary's Stadium during the Saints match against Preston in tribute to Mr Godden.
