The Hampshire Chronicle has launched a new feature using our unrivalled archive of news photographs over the decades.
The invaluable photo archive, with hundreds of glass negatives, is being cared for by Hampshire Cultural Trust at Bar End.
It shows the wide variety of news that the Chronicle has covered, from the opening of a new mini-park next to The Weirs in 1952 to the removal of the Black Swan statue from a building on the High Street. The pub of the same name was immortalised in a Sherlock Holmes short story called The Copper Beeches.
Winchester's links with the Army have always been strong and Field Marshal Montgomery visited the city in 1947. In a link another photos shows the building of the Romsey Road Boys' School, later to be renamed after the famous military commander.
The Chronicle would love to see any old photos from the past, to newsdesk@hampshirechronicle.co.uk or to the office at 5 Upper Brook Street.
