KINGS Worthy residents were plunged into darkness after a power cable was damaged.

The power cut was on Court Road on Thursday, February 22.

A spokesperson from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said: “Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) was alerted to a power cut in Court Road, Kings Worthy just after 2pm on Thursday, February 22.

“As a result of third-party damage to a power cable, seven local customers were initially off supply, with a further 14 then losing power when SSEN’s engineers had to pull fuses to carry out the repairs safely. All supplies were repaired and restored by 8.45pm.

“SSEN would like to remind anyone working near power cables of the dangers they face or pose to others by damaging live electricity cables. Before any work is carried out, SSEN advises that information on cable location is obtained and that safety guidelines, all available via ssen.co.uk/power-cuts-emergencies/keeping-safe/, are fully observed.”

One Court Road resident who was affected by the power cut said: “This is the third time this has happened in two years.

“As residents pick up the pieces from this latest disruption, there is a growing call for stricter regulations and oversight to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Oliver Bowhill, of Mayhill Estates, the developer working nearby, said: “Every effort was made prior to the work on this site to locate the cable in question, including a ground scan by SSE engineers.

“The map provided by SSE showed the cable in the wrong location, and showed it in a neighbouring property.

“We are working with SSE to reroute this cable with minimal disruption to residents. We are asking SSE to replace the cable at the correct depth and with the correct warning tape, as this was not done previously.”
