A MYSTERIOUS generator which has been taking up pavement space in Winchester city centre has been removed.

The generator was located on Middle Brook Street and was installed at the beginning of February. It was removed today.

Despite its proximity to Wenzel’s the Bakers and Sainsbury’s, staff at both businesses had no knowledge of the reason it was there, with a manager at Sainsbury’s saying that he had heard it had been put in while work was carried out on local wireless networks.

A Chronicle reporter saw Openreach engineers attending the generator. However, the company also denied any involvement, with a spokeswoman saying: “We’re looking into it, but it is extremely unlikely that it’s ours.”

A Hampshire County Council consent to carry out works on the public highway notice was located near to the generator, listing the applicant as Joe Smith of Sm5 Developments.

Both Hampshire County Council and SM5 Developments have not responded to approaches for information.
