A HAMPSHIRE stroke club received a Royal letter on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
The Romsey Open Gate Stroke Club had a party on Tuesday, February 6 at Romsey Abbey Church Rooms.
Past and present members and supporters enjoyed an afternoon of songs, tea and cakes.
The stroke club feared closure last year after a drop-off in volunteers.
However, an appeal in the Romsey Advertiser, saw 10 new volunteers came forward to save the club.
Club secretary Joy Clamp wrote to King Charles about the celebration. A letter back from Tara Mundy, correspondence secretary, said: “The King has asked me to thank you for your kind letter sent on behalf of the Romsey Open Gate Stroke Club on the occasion of your 50th anniversary which is being celebrated on February 6 at Romsey Abbey Church Rooms.

“His Majesty was most interested to learn of the club, which has been supporting and encouraging those affected by strokes since 1974. On the occasion of this important milestone, the King sends his heartfelt congratulations to all of the members, friends and helpers involved in the continuation of this compassionate work.
“His Majesty appreciated your thoughtfulness in writing as you did. In return, the Kind has asked me to send his warmest good wishes to all concerned for a most memorable and enjoyable celebration.”
Certificates were handed out to volunteers to celebrate their long service, with several being there for more than 40 years.
A celebratory sponge cake was made for the occasion by club member Phyllis Burrell.
Group leader Tina Keightley said: “There were closure fears last year and the Advertiser was very good to help us out. We've got plenty of helpers now. I was here holding the fort at the meeting one Tuesday and a whole crowd of people turned up to see if they could help.
“We have a full programme of events this year as usual. We're always open to suggestions from people who come up with good ideas. We have about 35-40 members and almost as many volunteers sometimes.”
