MORE than 30 objections have been submitted over plans to build seven homes near a city centre college.

Alfred Homes wants to build the properties after demolishing the existing building at 30 Bereweeke Road, near Peter Symonds College.

After one objection was lodged by January 2, 34 had been sent by January 12. One supporting comment was also submitted.

The development includes access, parking and landscaping. It will have four three-bed houses, one four-bed and two five-bed.

Prunella Skinner, of Bereweeke Road, said: “The houses built in Bereweeke Road in the Edwardian era, of which no 30 is a splendid example, reflect the architecture of that time and should be respected and maintained.

Winchester needs more houses, but this is already being addressed, for example with the Cala homes development off nearby Andover Road, and the increasing number of infills in established properties. Development should not be allowed on this property, replacing a mature garden of environmental value with tarmac and seven houses. It will affect the established and respected character of this fine road in Winchester.”

David Watts, of Bereweeke Road, said: “My strongest reservations are those regarding the impact the scheme will have during the construction period.

“Traffic along Bereweeke Road is very busy at peak times and has heavy pedestrian use to and from Peter Symonds College. Also, traffic flow is often severely hampered by the provision of several parking zones along the road.

“I can see that the addition of several HGV's an hour from the building site, will create havoc and delays to the through traffic. That will create extra traffic noise and pollution for the residents in the area. This will be particularly true during the drop-off and pick-up times for Peter Symonds college, when many more cars are parked on the single yellow lines along Bereweeke Road.

“Many of us dread the thought of over a year of construction noise and dust, particularly if the wind is a south easterly.”

Supporter Debra Clayton, of Winnall Manor Road, said: “It looks very pleasant and inviting, should bring much cheer to the area, privacy, trees and greenery work well.

“Local college and schools within walking distance. In keeping with the rest of the street six detached properties would work better rather than five detached and two semis.

“Having just six properties would also allow for more parking facilities as we all know how many cars a household can accumulate.”

On the application's planning statement, it said: “The architecture proposed is classical in nature, but varied, providing for seven new family homes within close proximity to the services and facilities of the city centre. At 18 dwellings to the hectare, the proposal makes more efficient use of the land in accordance with the policies as contained within the Development Plan, while preserving the character of the locality, and furthermore, facilitating further development to the rear of Bereweeke Road should at any point in time in the future this come forward."
