Plans to move a fence and relocate a gate in a Romsey housing estate have had objections from neighbours.

Martin Whitcher submitted the application for the scheme at the property in The Meadows.

Two public objections have been submitted, saying it will be out of character for the area.

Thomas Kinnear, of Tithe Mead, said: “I wish to lodge my objection to this Application on the basis that the close boarded fence is not in keeping with the character of the existing streetscape.

“The original design concept for this important thoroughfare comprises a mixture of screen walls and hedges; I am pretty sure that the original developer would not have been allowed to erect close boarded fences in the original design and this should not be allowed now.

“This is the only close boarded fence along the entire length of Robert Whitworth Drive. This is a major route in Fishlake Meadows and erecting a close boarded fence along the back of the footway would not only be detrimental to the character of the street but if approved would set a precedent for similar fences to be erected along the route.

“I suggest the applicant is encouraged to reinstate the hedge as originally planned for this location.”

The application is for the fence to be 1.83m high. Romsey Town Council's planning committee discussed the plans on Thursday, January 4 and decided to lodge an objection.

They have requested that the fence be 1m high.
