A SEA of bottles surrounded a Winchester bottle bank following the festive period.

Stacks of glass bottles and jars were left in bags, trollies and covering the area by the full recycling bins by Waitrose, in Weeke, up until four days after Christmas.

Winchester City Council collects glass bottles and jars for recycling once every four weeks from people’s black bins but Councillor Sue Cook believes this is not enough.

Cllr Cook said: “No glass recycling at Tesco Winnall, Sainsbury's Badger Farm or at Bar End Recycling Centre. We have kerbside but it is blatantly obvious things need to change.

“We need more regular collection from the door and recycling glass back at the recycling centres and more places to recycle glass.”

The glass recycling bins in Weeke and at the Cattle Market have since been emptied.

There was a similar scene at the Tesco Express bottle bank in Kings Worthy following the bank holiday at the beginning of September.

A city council spokesperson previously said: “We encourage residents to use our recycling banks where possible. When we are made aware of banks being used more than usual, we do make extra visits or consider other options.

“Our bottle banks are emptied at least four weekly, but the Biffa team do a ‘sweep’ each Saturday and will empty more frequently if bottle banks are becoming full."
