A MUSLIM group has paid tribute to a former Mayor of Winchester who died of cancer at the age of 79.
Chris Pines died on Saturday, December 9 at the Winchester Hospice after an 18-month battle with leukaemia.
Winchester Muslim Cultural Association credits Mr Pines as an advisor to the group.
Chairman Ahmed Moon said: “The Winchester Muslim Cultural Association is saddened by the passing of our good friend and mentor Chris Pines.

“Although Chris may be remembered for his decades of dedication to school pupils as a teacher and the community of Winchester as both a local councillor and mayor, we will remember Chris fondly for his constant and unwavering support of our organisation.
“From the beginning over 20 years ago, Chris was instrumental in bringing our community together, in not only drafting the first and second but also the latest iteration of our constitution.
“Chris acted for us as an independent election commissioner for over 23 years and even till the end was a source of guidance and inspiration. Chris has left a void in the fabric of Winchester that will be hard to fill. May he rest in peace.”
