WINCHESTER'S Liberal Democrat election candidate recently met two of the city's 'inspiring' education leaders.

Danny Chambers met Peter Symonds principal Sara Russell and St Swithun’s headteacher Jane Gandee.

Peter Symonds is the biggest sixth form college in the country and has for the past 20 years received an 'Outstanding' from Ofsted.

It has an impressive 95 per cent attendance which impacts positively on grades.

He said: “I spent part of my career teaching at a university, so I’ve held a long interest in education and ensuring young people can reach their full potential.

“I really enjoyed meeting the heads of both Peter Symonds and St Swithun’s to learn more about their education institutions. They are both incredibly inspiring individuals who have fostered a culture of inclusivity and high expectations.

“I also got to spend time discussing politics with pupils at St Swithun’s. It was interesting to hear about the issues about which they are most passionate - preventing climate change and supporting mental health. These are two issues close to my heart with my background in science and as a trustee of a mental health charity.

“It is interesting to see that almost all of Winchester’s main education institutions are now led by women with Sara at Symonds being the first female principal in the college’s history. I’m inspired by all of Winchester’s education leaders and the work they do to make this a great place to come and raise a family.

“We are so fortunate to have these fantastic schools in Winchester.”
