CHILDREN from a Winchester primary school are seeing their favourite recipes in print for the first time as they are published in a cookbook.

The book, entitled Celebrate Taste, Reduce Waste, contains more than 60 recipes from the families of pupils at All Saints C of E Primary School in Highcliffe.

It features a range of familiar favourites like Yorkshire Pudding and Apple and Blackberry Pie sit alongside international fare including Libyan Stuffed Peppers and Brazilian Feijoada.

The book also includes tips for reducing food waste and a guide to home composting.

Jane Hall, headteacher of All Saints, said she was excited about the launch of the book.

She said: “Some of our All Saints families have lived in Highcliffe for generations, while others have travelled the world before choosing this corner of Winchester as their home. Food is an amazing way to connect with other families and learn about each other’s cultures.”

The book was compiled and edited by local food writer Susie Carter, who has two children at the school. She said: “Every family has one or two cherished dishes up their sleeve that they cook again and again. This cookbook is a great way of sharing these recipes with each other.

“I think it’s important to know what a finished dish looks like before you start making it, especially if it’s a cuisine you’re not familiar with. We wanted the book to be as user-friendly as possible.”

The project was funded by Hampshire County Council’s Waste Prevention Community Grant fund. Other activities within the project have included a pre-loved cookware sale at the school.

Chair of the All Saints PTA, Helen Fisher, said: “These are tough times for a lot of families, but there are real savings to be made by cutting down on the food we throw away.

“Our children are enthusiastic environmentalists in the making. Their generation is inspiring the rest of us to change old habits!”

Celebrate Taste, Reduce Waste is currently available to purchase from P&G Wells bookshop in College Street, as well as the Winchester Visitor Information Centre.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will be used by All Saints PTA to enhance the school experience for every child.
