There has been no doubt over time, we have evolved as a species. From horses to cars, abacuses to computers. However one thing throughout history has surprisingly not been majorly reformed. The Education System!

The main question that should be asked is why? The Education System is probably one of the best tools governments can utilise to build a successful society. To the extreme it can be used to control but it could also be used to create the smarts of the world, So then why has the education system not seen major improvements?

The first point to understand is the standardised nature of teaching. Yes the curriculum has changed but the fundamental issue is many students simply don’t learn well in standardised classroom environments. Some learn best through visuals and some others best learn through practicals. Many professionals argue that generalising education is very much unjust and not good for educating people.

The second point many make is the system of grades. It is indeed true that a student must be assessed on understanding , but many professionals believe that there are better ways to grade a student as they believe that it creates an extrinsic motivation for students to work towards. Indeed this may not be necessarily true but it very much takes away from learning and comprehending and replaces it with students having to score as high as possible and earn as many marks as possible.

The last point to understand is the emphasis the education system has on memorisation instead of emphasising the importance of understanding. The reason why professionals believe this is because education isn’t for remembering useless facts but instead, it was created to enlighten, explain and help students to better understand and comprehend life itself. This is one of the main reasons why many fail to grasp the enjoyment in education and in learning.

Now it can be debated on how to solve such issues but some main ideas could be:

1. Create standardised test to see what type of learner a student is (An example could be https://arden.ac.uk/what-type-learner-are-you, however it has not been scientifically proven to work)

2. Make learning about comprehension and not trying to score as high as possible

3. Having teachers focus on what is interesting and continually assessing students on what they have learnt

Unfortunately these solutions are very much vague and quite idealistic, the issue is many professionals debate how they should be handled and there are very much disagreements in how things should be handled. With such compelling evidence many professionals believe that change is imminent and it is fundamental to help our future generations to thrive and triumph with such changes.
