A car has crashed into a building at Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

On Wednesday, November 23, just before 1pm a car crashed into the door of the power unit at the hospital on Romsey Road. 

After the crash, the hospital declared a critical incident, the Chronicle understands that some wards are under emergency lighting.

People are being urged to only attended the Emergency Department if they are facing an emergency and patients should attend doctors appointments unless told otherwise.

A spokesperson from the hospital said: "There has been a vehicle collision with a power unit in the car park at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester. The Trust has called a critical incident. 

“The power to some areas of the site has been affected. Our backup generators are running and electrical engineers are at the site.

“We are asking people to attend the Emergency Department only if it is an emergency. If you have an appointment, please continue to attend as normal.

“You can help by supporting us to get your loved ones home as soon as the decision has been made that they are ready to be discharged.

“We are focused on managing the incident whilst continuing to provide care to our patients. Our priority remains keeping our patients, staff, and visitors safe.

A police spokesperson added: "We were called at 12.55pm to a report of a car colliding with a building in the car park of the Royal Hampshire Hospital and minor injuries were reported."

The car was removed from the site at around 4.30pm.
