Winchester's famous Christmas market opened this morning, with thousands attending from across the country.

A wide range of stall holders greeted people as the market opened at 10am in the surroundings of Winchester Cathedral.

The market is running until Thursday, December 21.

Freddie and Charley Ebdon, from St Cross, had a stall called Master Hors D'oeuvres selling a variety of Caviar.

Freddie said: “We've got a variety of products, the idea is everyone is going to be celebrating with friends and family throughout the festive period. So we've got fine products to go on canapes.

“As well as Caviar, we also have different types of pate. It's really high-end, up-market and absolutely delicious. They all go beautifully with different things like champagne and scrambled eggs.

“We set up the business for the market this year, so it's only been going for about five days. This is the first step, and if all goes according to plan we going to try and do it full-time.”

She said: “We have a heart for people experiencing homelessness. So for every item purchased, an essential item of clothing is donated to a homeless shelter. It just makes you feel better about purchasing something.”

They will be donating to Winchester Beacon.

Nici Simon, from Consortium in Jewry Street, was at the stall for Winchester independent businesses.

She said: “It has been very good and steady. There has been lots of people and it's a beautiful day to start the market. We're selling quite small things. The gloves are going really well and some lovely socks, as well as Christmas decorations but we've obviously got some lovely stock in our shop in Jewry Street.”

Last year, the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market saw record numbers, with more than 400,000 attending.
