THE Symondians' Association held its final annual Winchester dinner last month.
Meeting at the Mercure Wessex Hotel, more than 70 members and guests gathered to celebrate the associations’ work and to enjoy the company of former contemporaries.
The association was founded in 1911 when the establishment was a Grammar School for boys before it became a college for boys and girls at sixteen years of age in 1974.
Steve Hankin, president of the Symondians’ Association, welcomed attendees and confirmed the annual general meeting held that afternoon had agreed to dissolve the organisation due to falling membership and insufficient volunteers to continue the committee.
Henry Meyer, who attended the school from 1942-1950 said the Symonds Grace; he was one of a dozen members present, who were at the school during the 1940s.
To end the formal proceedings, Anthony Paice, the association's archivist, gave an address setting out the history of the alumni society since its inception sharing many amusing anecdotes. He commented further that over the years the association had successfully enabled former pupils to keep in touch and to meet up at its social and sporting occasions, whilst providing financial support latterly to the college.
