THE history of Winchester is well-known; how the Iron Age settlements at Oram's Arbour and St Catherine's Hill were replaced by the conquering Romans' founding of Venta Belgarum.
Much Roman city history is still unknown but the streets where we walk and drive today are based on those built by the Romans and amended by the Saxons.
There is only one visible piece of city wall from the Roman period which ran from about 50-410AD. It is inside a sort of gated grotto on The Weirs close to the Bishop on the Bridge pub.
The problem is that the little bit of wall is being overgrown by weed.
The plaque has the city emblem on it, so surely the city council could send someone to spend 10 minutes tidying it up? Belgarum has asked.
