A NEW sound and light show honouring Remembrance has come to Winchester Cathedral.
Created by artist collective Luxmuralis, who have previously displayed work in the building, the show, entitled Poppy Fields, reflects on the First and Second World Wars and looks ahead for peace.
Created by lead artist and director Peter Walker, Poppy Fields consists of a series of different artworks based on the theme of Remembrance. This includes a tribute to the NHS, a reflection on the Battle of the Somme and a final piece which aims to immerse viewers in a simulated field of poppies before inviting visitors to imagine what peace could look like in the future.
Cathedral hosts light and sound installation by award-winning artists
READ MORE:The show also contains music composed by Luxmuralis composer David Harper with poetry read by actor Eddie Redmayne.
Peter told the Chronicle: “This is the fourth light show we have done here at the cathedral, and this one is quite different as it focuses on this Remembrancetide that we are entering right now.
“But it’s not just reflecting on the past, although we have a strong essence of that, looking back at how things have gone over the last century or so, it also looks forward as well. It looks for, what we are all striving for, which is a collective desire for peace. I think that looking back and reflecting on what is going on today lets us see that is where we need to be at this point in time.
“Where it is different is that visitors can go through different installations which build a narrative and build a story.”

Peter continued: “All of the shows are different. I see them as a collection of paintings, where we have painted with light and sound instead of canvas. What we get are these collections which we can re-curate into the building and allows us to then build in that curation of the lighting elements an emotional journey and a story, and create the space that people need to engage with it themselves.”
Tickets for the show, which runs from Tuesday, October 31 to Saturday, November 4, are still available. They cost £10 for adults, £9.25 for students and £6 for children aged three to six. Children under three can enter for free.
The tickets can be purchased on the Winchester Cathedral website or at the door.
The cathedral will hold a Remembrance service on Sunday, November 12.
