POSTPONED essential works to an unstable wall in Winchester City Centre will begin this month, disrupting traffic on the busy road.

Planned repairs to North Walls, bordering Marston Gate, are being resumed due to safety concerns over the stability of the wall, according to the construction consultants.

Traffic and pedestrians will be affected due to temporary lane and pavement closures enforced at certain stages, until the essential repairs are completed in four months.

The pavement will be closed when works start on Monday, October 16, while contractors remove ivy and vegetation from both sides of the wall.

Three weeks later, one lane will be shut while scaffolding is erected for the repairs to start.

The lane will be blocked between Monday, November 6 and Tuesday, November 14, opening for the weekend traffic.

There will then be a pavement closure in place for the duration of the works until the lane is closed again to accommodate the removal of the scaffolding, this will be from Monday, February 26 to Tuesday, March 5.

All works are hoped to be completed by Friday, March 8.

Access for pedestrians will be closed on the wall side of the road with directional signage directing pedestrians around the working site.

The works were originally scheduled for over the summer but were delayed until “further notice” due to additonal tests being needed following discussions between the contractors and Historic England.

North Walls marks the northern line of the city's defences originally built in Roman times and upgraded in the Middle Ages.

Marston's Gate, off North Walls, was one of the entrances into the brewery that operated on the site for many decades. Marstons ceased brewing there but it remained as a distribution depot until the mid-1990s before redevelopment for homes.
