Further to Penny Clamp's letter (Chronicle, September 21), I remember the Chanel dress shop in Winchester very well because it is where my parents bought my dress for my 21st birthday party.  

It was made of white lace edged with silver, and of course I had to have a feather boa to go with it, this being the 60s!

The attached photo was taken at the party at what was then the Elizabethan Restaurant in Jewry Street, run by the Harrison family. 

Food was set out on the first floor, and there was a basement (to the right of the front door) which was set up as the dance floor.

I also remember Murrays and Miss Murray on the corner of City Road and Jewry Street (now a tanning shop), where not only did my parents buy me something new for a holiday, but also school uniform (not so exciting).

Plummers and Edmonds were elegant department stores, and let's not forget Sherriff & Ward at the bottom of town. Also, just below Lloyds Bank, a shop selling those gorgeous Dollyrocker dresses. Happy days!

I don't know if this Chanel was linked to Coco Chanel - somewhere I did have a photo of me at home with the new dress and the bag it came in, but annoyingly I can't find it now. The logo on the bag would have been a clue!
