Penny Clamp's letter stirred some memories (Hampshire Chronicle, September 21).
Clutching at an occasional shaft of lucidity, I think the ladies' clothes shop was Chanel with a nearby competitor Miss Mayfair, managed by a stunningly elegant lady, in the Square.
And then there was Magpie in St Thomas Street. After an hour or so at these establishments with the lady of the moment, we would adjourn to the Market Inn for an hour's abuse from legendary host Bill Wright.
Not satisfied with being rude, he would charge the equivalent of seven pence for a spam and coleslaw bap.
Then it was time for a rush to North Walls or King George V playing fields to do battle with Highcliffe Corinthians, Hyde Utd or King Alfred Old Boys.
Happy days - and the doctors were not on strike either.
