A MAN has been arrested for carrying a knife in Winchester city centre.

Police caught the 60-year-old man on City Road on Friday, August 31. 

He currently remains in custody.

This arrest comes a day after Stephen Wilson, 35, of Christchurch Road, was also arrested on suspicion of carrying a knife on the same street.

He was charged with shoplifting from Boots and Superdrug as well as possessing a knife and is expected to appear before Basingstoke Magistrates Court on September 1.

A post on the Winchester Police Facebook page says: "Good Afternoon from Winchester City.

"You may have seen a larger-than-usual police presence in Winchester today, and we wanted to give you some clarification as to why.

"This morning we received a report of a male walking around Winchester City Centre with a knife. Officers from Winchester DPT and NPT attended and conducted an area search for the male.

"The male was located on City Road and searched by our officers, where a knife was found to be in his possession. A 60-year-old male from Winchester has been arrested for being in possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He remains in custody at this time.

"Knife crime is extremely serious and any report of individuals carrying a knife in Winchester will be dealt with robustly. Officers are keen to stress that nobody was harmed in this incident but are thankful to the member of public who reported this incident to us. We would encourage others to do the same if they have concerns about someone carrying a knife."
