A GROUP celebrating the Sombornes history is celebrating its 45th anniversary with a day full of talks, games, displays and a special film viewing.
In 1978, following a lot of interest in a local archaeology dig, the Somborne and District Society - also known as SOMSOC was formed to promote historical research and social events.
Over the past 45 years, the organisation has led monthly talks, visits, research projects, publications and the ‘John of Gaunt Award’ – a competition for children linked to the Sombornes.
John of Gaunt was a son of King Edward III of England, and the father of King Henry IV, who owned property near the village.

To mark its anniversary, SOMSOC has organised a local history day titled ‘Sombornes Revisited’, from 9.15am to 4pm, on Saturday, September 23 at King’s Somborne Village Hall.
Inspired by the Timsbury history day last year, the morning focuses on three talks with ‘bring and show’ displays by surrounding history societies, and Somborne artists, Hugh Dumas and Sarah Seymour.
Speakers include senior Hampshire County Council archaeologist Thom Hayes, Bill Fergie from the Hampshire Field Club and Patricia Silver-Warner from Winchester University, who will talk through Somborne’s past from prehistory to Victorian times.

During the afternoon, visitors will be able to view the displays, speak to experts about ‘garden’ finds, watch the film ‘Viewing Somborne’ and play old-fashioned games.
‘Viewing Somborne’, by Bill Sutton, was made for the Somborne and District Society and records the pattern of a year in the life of King’s Somborne. The film features different societies and events from 1996 and explores late 20th century village life.
Tickets cost £5 per adult, including morning refreshments and a lucky ticket entry to the raffle.
Picnics are welcome and light refreshments will be available from lunchtime. The raffle draw will be at 3.30pm. Tickets are available from King’s Somborne Post Office or by emailing linda.aucock@btinternet.com.
