WINCHESTER City Council has responded to a café and wine bar shutting until “further notice”.

Autumn House, in The Square, has been closed as of Monday, August 21.

Following the news, a council spokesperson said: “We understand that the owners of Autumn House have closed their business until further notice.

“We have reached out to them so that we can find out more about the situation and hope to offer any support that we can at this time.”

A notice up has been put up on the front door of the Winchester City Council-owned building. It reads: “Autumn House will be closed today until further notice.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The café and wine bar was opened by the owners of The Pump House, in Garnier Road, St Cross, Alex Donnan and Laura Turner, in May last year.

The business replaced the long-standing Dinghams Cookshop, which closed at the beginning of last year when it could no longer afford to pay its rent to the council.

The closure of Autumn House follows its recent membership merger with The Pump House. The upstairs section of the city centre cafe was renovated in June, to create a private space and form part of The Pump House members club offering – beginning from August 1.

Reasons for the closure and whether it will re-open remain unknown, with the business being active on social media and encouraging customers to come in, up until two days before it shut its doors.

On Tuesday, August 22 morning, nine four-pint bottles of milk could be seen left out in the sun on the floor of the unit.

The Pump House has been contacted for further information.
