Winchester cafe and bar, Autumn House, closes until 'further notice'

Autumn House, in The Square, shut its doors on Monday, August 21. A small sign up on the front door reads: “Autumn House will be closed today until further notice.

“Thank you for your understanding.”

The closure follows the recent membership merger with The Pump House. The upstairs section of Autumn House was renovated in June, to create a private space and form part of The Pump House members club offering – beginning from August 1.

Owners of The Pump House, in Garnier Road, St Cross, Alex Donnan and Laura Turner, opened Autumn House in May last year.

The café and wine bar replaced the long-standing Dinghams Cookshop, which closed at the beginning of last year when it could no longer afford to pay its rent to Winchester City Council.

Reasons for the Autumn House closure and whether it will re-open remain unknown, with the business being active on social media and encouraging customers to come in, up until four days ago.

Nine bottles of milk have been left out inside and the rest of the cafe seems well stocked.

In September, the café was given a hygiene rating of one at its first inspection, with manager at the time Reece Comberbach claiming the venue was not prepared as a “start-up and new business”.

Pump House owners Alex Donnan and Laura Turner also used to own The General Store, across the road in The Square, but the shop and café was taken over by new owners and under a different company in February.
