A WINCHESTER car park will be closed to allow cranes to operate on-site as engineering work progresses.
Garnier Road has been closed to vehicles since March while workers replace the 100-year-old Tunbridge, by St Catherine’s Hil, in a nine-month project.
Garnier Road car park will be closed from Wednesday, August 23 to Friday, August 25 and from Tuesday, August 29 to Thursday, August 31 with cranes in use between 8am and 4pm to lift out pieces of the existing bridge.
The car park, commonly used by walkers and customers of The Handlebar Café, will re-open over the bank holiday weekend (Saturday, August 26 to Monday, August 28).

During the temporary closure, drivers can instead use the nearby St Catherine’s Park and Ride where a section of short-stay parking spaces have been reserved for Handlebar Café users to park for free.
For safety reasons, pedestrian and cyclist access over the temporary footbridge will be halted for up to half an hour at a time while lifting is going on.
Pedestrian and cyclist access through Garnier Road car park will be open for most of the closure, except when heavy items are being lifted. Entry points will be staffed to pause access at these times.
Hampshire County Council started the £1.4m scheme to make sure the structure remains safe and in a serviceable condition for the next 100 years.
The project is on track to be completed by the end of November.
