I regularly attend the 8am Sunday service in the cathedral and am appalled at the new parking charges in Colebrook Street car park.
After querying the new charges with Winchester City Council I was told that my thoughts were correct. I arrive at 7.40am to buy my ticket and get to the cathedral in time for the 8am service. l will now have to pay £3.30 from 7.40am-8am and a further £1.80 from 8am-8.40am, a cost of £5.10 for an hour's parking. With the cost of living crisis that we are all facing I think this new charging scheme is grossly unfair, unreasonable and will result in less giving to the cathedral. I will definitely need to continue praying to God as, it seems, He is my last hope, there being no common sense or joined up thinking in the council!
I was told I could park in Chesil Street car park for free. However, if you have difficulty walking, but do not qualify for a Blue Badge, it is an awful long way to walk, for a person of any age.
I am continually frustrated with the lack of good use of our money that we give to Winchester City Council. It would be great if, for example, some was spent on cleaning the public toilets - they are disgraceful considering Winchester's wealth. I know this letter probably won't make any difference, but I just wanted to air my views - I feel very strongly that the council are ruining the beautiful city I was born in.
