Tom Wood, of Tower Street, said: "It's just a massive inconvenience. My whole car has been smashed, nothing actually valuable has been stolen out of it, so somebody has done it for the sake of it.

"I can't believe we didn't hear it."

Kate Powell, also of Tower Street, said that her car had not been targeted, but noticed that the front window to her block of flats had been damaged.

She said: "You don't expect this in Winchester, do you?"

Kay Warren, who lives on nearby Gladstone Street, said that she heard the incident take place. She told the Chronicle: "I heard bangs around 5am.

"And I woke up to work out where the noise was coming from, because in this area, in the house, you're not sure where the noise is coming from because of the design. So I went out the back and looked over the fence and there was a young lad down Tower Street just throwing bricks and stones into the cars down Tower Street."
